Acetone is fully miscible with water, with solubility greater than or equal to 100 mg/mL at 72 °F. Its vapor pressure is 180 mmHg at 68 °F and 270 mmHg at 86 °F, which means it evaporates rapidly at room temperature — a useful property for cleaning and extraction, but one that demands adequate ventilation. With a flash point of 0 °F, acetone ignites easily. Store it in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, open flames, sparks, and direct sunlight. Use HDPE or glass containers; acetone will attack certain plastics and rubber seals. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use — the high vapor pressure means an open container loses volume fast and fills the headspace with flammable vapor.
Avoid contact with strong oxidizing agents and concentrated acids. Wear chemical-splash goggles and nitrile or butyl rubber gloves when handling. In areas without mechanical ventilation, use respiratory protection rated for organic vapors. Vapors are heavier than air and can travel along floors to remote ignition sources — ground all transfer equipment and eliminate static discharge.
