Size Matters

How container size affects shipping classification, cost, and delivery speed.

Quart-Size Containers

  • Qualify as Limited Quantity Exempt under DOT regulations, dramatically reducing shipping complexity
  • Eligible for air shipping via UPS, enabling faster delivery to all 48 contiguous states
  • No hazmat surcharges on most shipments, saving $30-80+ per order in fees
  • Lower total cost for small-volume needs compared to larger containers with hazmat fees
  • Standard UPS Ground and UPS Air delivery options available

Gallon+ Containers

  • Full DOT hazardous materials classification required for most chemicals
  • Ground shipping only for hazmat-classified products (no air transport)
  • Hazmat handling and compliance fees added to shipping cost
  • Longer transit times due to ground-only restriction
  • Best value per unit volume for large-quantity needs

Real Example

See the actual cost difference on a common product: MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone).

Better Value

4 x Quart Bottles

Product Cost $43.96
Shipping $15.27
Hazmat Fee $0.00
Total $59.23

1 x Gallon Jug

Product Cost $31.99
Shipping $22.06
Hazmat Fee $43.00
Total $97.05

Savings: $37.82 per gallon equivalent

By purchasing 4 quarts instead of 1 gallon of MEK, you get the same total volume while avoiding the $43.00 hazmat surcharge entirely. The quarts ship as Limited Quantity Exempt via standard UPS Ground.

DOT Regulations

Understanding Limited Quantity Exemptions under federal hazmat shipping rules.

Limited Quantity Exemption

Under 49 CFR 173.150, hazardous materials shipped in containers at or below specific volume thresholds qualify for Limited Quantity status. This exempts them from full DOT hazmat labeling, placarding, and handling requirements, significantly reducing shipping costs.

Air Transport via UPS

Limited Quantity packages are eligible for air transport, meaning your chemicals can ship via UPS Next Day Air or 2nd Day Air. Full hazmat packages are restricted to ground transport only, which can mean 5-7 day transit times to distant states.

Ground Shipping

All package sizes ship via UPS Ground. For hazmat-classified packages (typically gallons and larger), ground is the only option. Transit times range from 1-7 business days depending on distance from our Austin, TX distribution center.

Smart Tips

Practical strategies to reduce your chemical shipping costs.

Buy Multiple Quarts

For quantities up to 4 quarts, buying individual quart bottles often costs less than a single gallon after factoring in hazmat fees. You get the same total volume with lower total cost and faster shipping options.

Check Product Details

Each product page shows available sizes and shipping classifications. Look for the "Limited Quantity" designation on quart-sized products. Not all chemicals qualify, so verify before assuming exemption status.

Plan Ahead for Bulk

If you need 5 gallons or more regularly, contact us about LTL freight pricing. Bulk shipments via freight carrier often have lower per-gallon costs than multiple parcel shipments, even with hazmat handling.

Bulk and Commercial

Freight options for large-volume and recurring chemical orders.

LTL Freight (Less Than Truckload)

150 - 10,000 lbs

Ideal for pallet quantities, drums, and totes. Shipments are palletized and shipped via regional and national LTL carriers. Typical transit time is 3-7 business days depending on destination.

Carriers: XPO Logistics, Saia, ABF Freight, Southeastern Freight Lines

FTL Freight (Full Truckload)

10,000+ lbs / Dedicated Truck

For large-volume orders requiring a dedicated truck. Includes tanker loads for liquid chemicals and flatbed loads for drummed product. Contact our logistics team for competitive FTL quotes.

Dedicated carriers for hazmat and non-hazmat loads nationwide

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about chemical shipping costs and logistics.

Shipping FAQ

Why are there hazmat fees on some chemicals?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) classifies many chemicals as hazardous materials for shipping purposes. Carriers like UPS charge additional handling fees for hazmat packages because they require special labeling, documentation, and handling procedures. These fees typically range from $30 to $80+ per package depending on the carrier and hazard class.

Are quarts really cheaper than gallons?

In many cases, yes. When a chemical carries a hazmat classification, the per-package hazmat surcharge on a 1-gallon container can exceed the total shipping cost of 4 quart bottles that qualify as Limited Quantity Exempt. The quarts avoid the surcharge entirely. We recommend comparing the total cost (product + shipping + fees) at checkout for both options.

Why do hazmat fees exist?

Hazmat fees cover the additional costs carriers incur for compliance with DOT regulations: specialized training for handlers, proper labeling and documentation, segregation requirements during transport, emergency response planning, and liability insurance. These are federal requirements, not optional carrier charges.

What qualifies as a Limited Quantity shipment?

Under 49 CFR 173.150, Limited Quantity status applies to hazardous materials shipped in inner containers at or below specific volume thresholds (typically 1 liter or 1 quart for most liquid chemicals). The shipment must also be within overall package weight limits. Products that qualify are marked on our product pages.

How much can I really save with quart bottles?

Savings vary by chemical and destination, but $30-80+ per order is common. In our MEK example, buying 4 quarts instead of 1 gallon saved $37.82 total. For chemicals with higher hazmat classifications (like strong acids), the savings can be even greater. Check the total at checkout to see the exact difference.

Why is my shipping quote $57 for one item but $16 for four items?

This typically happens when a single larger container triggers hazmat classification while multiple smaller containers qualify as Limited Quantity Exempt. The $57 quote includes a hazmat surcharge; the $16 quote does not. The carrier treats these as fundamentally different shipment types with different fee structures.

What carriers does Alliance Chemical use?

For parcel shipments, we primarily use UPS (Ground, 2nd Day Air, and Next Day Air). For LTL freight, we work with XPO Logistics, Saia, ABF Freight, and Southeastern Freight Lines. For full truckload (FTL) shipments, we use dedicated hazmat and non-hazmat carriers based on route and product requirements. Carrier selection is optimized for cost and transit time.
