01

The short answer

Quick answer

PROTOCOL LT is an inhibited ethylene glycol heat-transfer fluid for light-duty closed loops, sold as a concentrate (LT-100) and as premixes named by percent glycol by volume: LT-40 is 40% ethylene glycol by volume and freezes at about -13 °F. Our inhibited ethylene glycol premixes are named by percent by weight, so match on freeze point, not on the number in the name. Our inhibitor chemistry is different from PROTOCOL's, so this is an alternative, not the same fluid.

What to order

The products that fit this spec, and what each one is for.

For LT-40 (-13 °F)

Inhibited Ethylene Glycol 40/60, Nitrite-Free

41-44% ethylene glycol by weight, which lands at the same -13 °F typical freeze point as a 40% by volume blend.

Freeze point: approx. -25 °C (-13 °F) typical; -23 °C (-10 °F) max, at 41-44 wt% ethylene glycol (ASTM D1177) · Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

For LT-30 (3 °F)

Inhibited Ethylene Glycol 35/65 with OAT-908

35% by weight premix that freezes a little colder than LT-30, so it covers the same design temperature.

Freeze point: approx. -18 °C (0 °F) typical; -17 °C (1 °F) max, at 35 wt% ethylene glycol · Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

Concentrate, or blended to order

100% Ethylene Glycol Inhibited

Inhibited ethylene glycol concentrate for site blending with deionized water, or blended by us to the freeze point you need, such as LT-50's -36 °F.

Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

Need a different concentration? We blend to the freeze point you specify, in pails, drums and 275- or 330-gallon totes.

Questions

Which of your products matches PROTOCOL LT-40?

Our Inhibited Ethylene Glycol 40/60, Nitrite-Free: about -13 °F typical, matching the freeze point of LT-40. Our 40/60 with OAT-908 is 40% by weight and freezes at about -8 °F, so it is a weaker blend than LT-40.

Why doesn't 40/60 mean the same thing on both labels?

PROTOCOL grades are percent glycol by volume. Our OAT premixes are percent by weight, and 40% by volume of ethylene glycol is about 42.5% by weight. Pick the strength from your coldest fluid temperature, not from the number in the name.

Can I top up a PROTOCOL LT system with your fluid?

No. Do not mix inhibitor chemistries. Drain, flush with deionized water and refill.

Can you match LT-50?

Yes, we blend it to order from our 100% Ethylene Glycol Inhibited concentrate to the freeze point you specify. Send the design temperature and system volume with your quote request.

Can you add dye?

Yes. Our fluid ships undyed; green or purple leak-detection dye can be pre-mixed on request.
