01

The short answer

Quick answer

Freez-Kontr'l is Nu-Calgon's line of inhibited propylene glycol heat-transfer fluids: Freez-Kontr'l 35 and Freez-Kontr'l 50 are ready-to-use premixes, and Freez-Kontr'l (70% propylene glycol) and Freez-Kontr'l 95/5 (95%) are concentrates. Freez-Kontr'l 35 freezes at +2 °F and Freez-Kontr'l 50 at -25 °F. Our 35/65 premix freezes at about 2 °F typical and our 50/50 premix at about -28 °F. Our inhibitor is a nitrite-containing hybrid organic-acid package, not Nu-Calgon's phosphate, so this is an alternative, not the same fluid.

Questions

Which of your products matches Freez-Kontr'l 35?

Our Inhibited Propylene Glycol 35/65 with OAT Inhibitor, at about 2 °F typical against Freez-Kontr'l 35's +2 °F. Our guaranteed maximum is 4 °F, so if you need margin, our 40/60 at about -6 °F freezes colder.

Which of your products matches Freez-Kontr'l 50?

Our Inhibited Propylene Glycol 50/50 with OAT Inhibitor, at about -28 °F typical against Freez-Kontr'l 50's -25 °F.

What is the difference between freeze and burst protection?

Freeze point is where ice crystals start to form and the fluid stops pumping well. Burst protection is the colder temperature down to which the slush will not split the pipes, if the system is idle and has room to expand. Nu-Calgon publishes both; Freez-Kontr'l 50 is -25 °F freeze and -95 °F burst. Compare freeze point to freeze point and burst point to burst point, never one against the other. We do not publish burst ratings; we design to freeze point.

Can I use Nu-Calgon's dilution chart with your concentrate?

No. Freez-Kontr'l charts are percent by volume of a 70% or 95% propylene glycol product. Our concentrate is about 96% propylene glycol by weight, so the same percentage gives a different freeze point. Mix by freeze point and check with a propylene glycol refractometer, or let us blend it to order.

Can I top up a Freez-Kontr'l system with your fluid?

No. Do not mix inhibitor chemistries. Drain, flush with deionized water and refill.

Can I use your propylene glycol where it may contact food or drinking water?

No. Nu-Calgon sells Freez-Kontr'l for use where incidental food or potable-water contact could occur; ours is not food grade and is not for food contact or potable water.

Can you dye it blue like Freez-Kontr'l?

No. Our fluid ships undyed; green or purple leak-detection dye can be pre-mixed on request.
