The short answer

Quick answer

DOWFROST is Dow's food-grade inhibited propylene glycol (USP-grade glycol with a phosphate inhibitor), sold as a concentrate and as 25 to 50% premixes. For HVAC, chiller and process loops that do not need a food-grade fluid, our inhibited propylene glycol premixes (30/70, 40/60, 50/50) and our 96/4 concentrate do the same job. Ours uses a nitrite-containing inhibitor and is not food grade, so it is not a fit where incidental food contact or potable-water protection is required.

Freeze point: approx. -13 °C (9 °F) at 30 wt% propylene glycol · Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

Ready-mixed 50/50

Inhibited Propylene Glycol 50/50 with OAT Inhibitor

50% propylene glycol premix for outdoor and freeze-exposed piping.

Freeze point: approx. -33 °C (-28 °F) at 50 wt% propylene glycol · Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

Concentrate

100% Propylene Glycol Inhibited

96/4 inhibited propylene glycol concentrate for blending on site with deionized water.

Questions

Is there a DOWFROST equivalent?

Several suppliers sell inhibited propylene glycol for HVAC and chiller loops. Ours is an alternative for non-food loops: it uses a nitrite-containing inhibitor instead of DOWFROST's phosphate package and it is not food grade.

Can I use it in a food plant or for potable water?

No. Our inhibited propylene glycol is not food grade and is not for food contact or potable-water protection.

Can I top up a DOWFROST system with your premix?

No. Do not mix inhibitor chemistries. Drain, flush with deionized water and refill.

Which strength matches DOWFROST 30 or DOWFROST 50?

Our 30/70 premix freezes at about -13 °C (9 °F) and our 50/50 at about -33 °C (-28 °F), both at the stated weight percent. Pick the strength from your coldest fluid temperature, not from the product name.
