The short answer

Quick answer

Size the coolant to the coldest fluid temperature the dry coolers and outdoor piping will see, plus a few degrees of margin, and no stronger: more glycol means less heat removal and more pumping. For most of Central Texas a 35% ethylene glycol coolant (freeze point about -17 °C max) covers a hard freeze; North Texas and sites that must ride through a February 2021-type event should run 40% (about -21 °C max); the Panhandle needs 50% (about -32 °C max). Check your miner maker's coolant table, since some require a nitrite-free inhibitor.

What to order

The products that fit this spec, and what each one is for.

Central Texas

Inhibited Ethylene Glycol 35/65 with OAT-908

35% ethylene glycol premix with a nitrite-containing hybrid organic-acid inhibitor, for miners whose maker allows nitrite.

Freeze point: approx. -18 °C (0 °F) typical; -17 °C (1 °F) max, at 35 wt% ethylene glycol · Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

Nitrite-free, North Texas

Inhibited Ethylene Glycol 40/60, Nitrite-Free

40% ethylene glycol with a nitrite-free inhibitor, for makers and containers that require it.

Freeze point: about -25 °C (-13 °F) typical · Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

Panhandle

Inhibited Ethylene Glycol 50/50 with OAT-908

50% ethylene glycol premix for the coldest Texas sites.

Freeze point: approx. -34 °C (-29 °F) typical; -32.5 °C (-27 °F) max, at 50 wt% ethylene glycol · Quart to 330-gallon tote · COA with every lot

Need a different concentration? We blend to the freeze point you specify, in pails, drums and 275- or 330-gallon totes.

What sets the strength

The few facts that decide how much glycol a site needs.

Design temperatureThe coldest temperature the coolant itself can reach, usually in outdoor dry coolers and exposed piping during a shutdown, not the average winter low
February 2021North Texas fell below 0 °F and Central Texas into the single digits °F for days
Freeze point vs burstDesign to the freeze point. Burst protection is lower, but a slushy loop will not cool miners
Strength costs heat transferEach step up in glycol lowers heat capacity and raises viscosity, so the pumps work harder and miners run warmer
Inhibitor rulesBitdeer, Bitmain and MicroBT each publish coolant limits; aluminum cold plates and some container tables rule out certain inhibitors

Questions

What glycol percentage should a Texas hydro mining site use?

About 35% ethylene glycol for most of Central Texas, 40% for North Texas or any site that must survive a February 2021-type freeze, and 50% for the Panhandle. Confirm against your miner maker's coolant table.

Is more glycol always safer?

No. Every extra point of glycol removes less heat and makes the pumps work harder. Use the lowest strength that covers your coldest fluid temperature plus margin.

Water or glycol for a Texas site?

Glycol, if any part of the loop sits outdoors. Pure water only works for fully indoor loops that never see freezing temperatures, even during a power loss.

Do you deliver to West and North Texas sites?

Yes. We blend in Taylor, Texas and ship totes by truckload or LTL; send the site and quantity for a freight quote.
