Chemical Profile
Methanol (CAS 67-56-1, molecular formula CH₃OH, molecular weight 32.042) is a colorless, fairly volatile liquid with a faintly sweet, pungent odor reminiscent of ethyl alcohol — though crude grades carry a sharper, more repulsive note. It is a low-density liquid at 0.792 g/mL (68 °F), lighter than water and fully miscible with it (solubility ≥100 mg/mL at 70 °F). Vapor pressure is notable: 100 mmHg at 70.2 °F, meaning it generates significant vapor at ambient temperatures. Those vapors are slightly heavier than air and can travel along floors, trenches, and sewer lines to reach a distant ignition source — then flash back. This volatility defines virtually every handling and storage decision around the product.
Industrial Applications
Methanol's value in industry rests on its solvency, volatility, and reactivity as a single-carbon alcohol. The applications below reflect the most common uses for Technical Grade material:

Chemical synthesis feedstock. Methanol is a primary building block in the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, methyl methacrylate, and other downstream chemicals. Its single hydroxyl group makes it a clean reactant in esterification, methylation, and transesterification reactions.

Fuel blending and additive use. Blended into gasoline or used directly in racing fuels and industrial burners, methanol modifies combustion characteristics. It is also used to remove water from automotive and aviation fuel systems — a practical application that exploits its complete water miscibility.

Solvent for extraction and dissolution. In chemical manufacturing, methanol dissolves a wide range of organic compounds and facilitates extraction processes where its volatility allows easy recovery by evaporation.

This is not a forgiving chemical. Skin absorption is a real exposure route — not just inhalation or ingestion. Operators should wear chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or butyl rubber), splash-proof safety goggles, and work under local exhaust ventilation or in a well-ventilated area. A face shield is warranted during transfer operations where splashing is possible.
Store methanol in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, and open flame. Compatible container materials include HDPE and glass. Keep the product isolated from strong oxidizing agents and concentrated acids, which can initiate violent reactions. Containers should remain tightly sealed when not in active use — methanol's vapor pressure ensures rapid evaporative loss and vapor accumulation in enclosed spaces. Any confined-space vapor buildup can form an explosive atmosphere.
Ground and bond all containers and transfer equipment to prevent static discharge during pouring or pumping.
