Handling & Storage
Sodium Hypochlorite 5.25% carries a Danger signal word (per the product's GHS classification). The hazard profile is real: it may be corrosive to metals (H290), causes severe skin burns and eye damage (H314), and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H400, H410). Contact with acids can release toxic gas (EUH031). Treat every container as a corrosive oxidizer — no exceptions.
Operators should wear chemical-splash goggles, face shield, and chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or butyl rubber) at a minimum. Use in a well-ventilated area or under local exhaust; the vapor pressure of 2–2.5 kPa at 20 °C means chlorine off-gas accumulates quickly in enclosed spaces.
Store in a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight. Heat and UV accelerate decomposition and reduce available chlorine over time. Use HDPE, glass, or other materials rated for hypochlorite service — common metals, including carbon steel and aluminum, corrode on contact. Keep away from acids and reducing agents; mixing with acids liberates chlorine gas rapidly. Segregate from organic materials, ammonia, and peroxides.
