Ethylene Glycol

Technical grade is the industrial tier: supplied for coatings, adhesives, cleaning, degreasing and general process work where certified trace-impurity limits are not written into the protocol. A lot-specific Certificate of Analysis is available on request. If your SOP names a higher analytical tier, specify that grade when you order — this product is not supplied to those specifications.

Product Overview

Ethylene Glycol 50/50 is a pre-diluted, Technical grade blend of ethylene glycol (CAS 107-21-1) and water, sold ready to use as an antifreeze and coolant base and as a general-purpose heat transfer fluid. The 50/50 ratio is the workhorse concentration for temperature control: enough glycol for freeze protection, enough water for heat capacity. Buyers who order it from us include maintenance teams topping up closed-loop cooling systems, industrial operators running heat transfer circuits and lab and facilities staff who want a consistent pre-mixed solution instead of blending concentrate on site.

We pack it across a wide range — from 1 quart bottles for bench and technical use up to 55 gallon drums, 275 gallon totes and 330 gallon totes for production-scale systems. All listed sizes are offered to order.

Why This Concentration

A 50/50 mix is the standard trade-off point between freeze protection and thermal performance. Water carries heat better than glycol; glycol depresses the freezing point and raises the boiling point. At 50/50 you get a balanced fluid that serves most closed-loop cooling, antifreeze and heat transfer duties without the handling step of diluting concentrate — no on-site water quality question, no mixing error and a consistent density of 1.07 g/mL at 20 °C from container to container.

Pick the pre-mixed 50/50 when your system spec calls for a standard glycol/water charge and you want repeatability. If your process needs a different glycol ratio for deeper freeze protection, that is a different product spec — confirm your system's requirement against the technical data sheet before ordering.

Chemical Profile

Ethylene glycol is a clear, colorless, syrupy liquid; this product is the 50/50 aqueous solution, an odorless liquid with a density of 1.07 g/mL at 20 °C. Ethylene glycol is fully miscible in water — published solubility is greater than or equal to 100 mg/mL at 63.5 °F — and its vapor pressure is low: 0.06 mmHg at 68 °F, rising to 1 mmHg at 127.4 °F. That low volatility is why glycol loops hold their charge instead of flashing off. The active component is ethylene glycol, formula C2H6O2, molecular weight 62.07, CAS 107-21-1. One point every handler should know: the primary hazard of ethylene glycol is environmental. As a water-miscible liquid it penetrates soil readily and can reach groundwater and nearby streams, so any spill should be contained immediately.

Industrial Applications

These are the established industrial uses buyers order this solution for:

  • Antifreeze — automotive and equipment cooling. In cooling systems, the glycol fraction lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point of the coolant charge, protecting blocks, pumps and radiators through seasonal extremes.
  • Heat transfer fluid — industrial loops. In closed-loop process cooling and heating circuits, a 50/50 glycol/water charge moves heat between the process and the exchanger while resisting freeze damage during shutdowns.
  • Hydraulic fluid component.Glycol/water solutions serve in certain hydraulic systems where a water-based, lubricating fluid is specified.
  • De-icing.Glycol solutions are applied to surfaces to prevent and remove ice formation in winter operations.
  • Solvent duty.Ethylene glycol acts as a solvent and reaction medium in some chemical manufacturing processes.

In every case, verify fluid compatibility and concentration requirements against your equipment manufacturer's specification and our technical data sheet before charging a system.

Handling & Storage

This product carries the signal wordWarning, with hazard statements H302 — Harmful if swallowed — and H373 — May cause damage to organs (kidneys) through prolonged or repeated exposure (per the product's GHS classification). Treat it accordingly: wear gloves and goggles, ventilate the work area and never leave open containers where the sweet-tasting liquid could be mistaken for something drinkable.

Store in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight, in compatible containers — HDPE and stainless steel are standard choices. Keep it away from strong oxidizing agents. Because a release threatens soil and groundwater, stage containers over secondary containment and keep absorbent on hand; limiting spread is the first response to any spill.

Hazmat & Shipping

Canonical transport status is not regulated. Review the current SDS and carrier requirements before shipment.

Documentation

A Safety Data Sheet ships with every order and is available in English, Spanish, French and Japanese. A technical data sheet is available for spec review before you buy and a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis is available on request, within 1-2 business days. If your receiving, EHS, or purchasing process needs any of these documents up front, ask and we will send them ahead of the order.
