Industrial alkaline electrolyzers typically operate on 20–30% KOH, and 25–30% is where conductivity is best without pushing viscosity or cell-component corrosion. Potassium hydroxide is preferred over sodium hydroxide for this duty because the potassium ion carries a smaller hydration radius, giving higher ionic conductivity at the same concentration.
