This is a colorless liquid solution, odorless in normal handling, and noticeably denser than water — our published density is 1.27 for the 25% w/w aqueous solution at 20 °C. That density is worth knowing before you spec transfer pumps or secondary containment: a 55-gallon drum of this product weighs meaningfully more than the same drum of water. Vapor pressure is approximately 0 mmHg, so the hazard is contact and splash, not inhalation of vapor from a closed container. The solute is sodium hydroxide, formula HNaO (written NaOH in most process documentation), molecular weight 39.997, CAS 1310-73-2, with a published solubility figure of 111%. The solution is corrosive to metals and tissue; contact severely irritates skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, and it is toxic by ingestion. Treat every transfer as a splash-risk operation.
