Hydrobromic acid is an aqueous solution of hydrogen bromide (HBr), CAS 10035-10-6. It is one of the strongest common mineral acids — stronger than hydrochloric acid — and is usually supplied as a ~48% w/w solution, a colorless to pale-yellow fuming liquid.
What is hydrobromic acid used for?
It is used mainly to make inorganic bromides (sodium, potassium, calcium, and zinc bromide), to produce alkyl and aryl bromides for organic synthesis, as a reagent and catalyst, and in pharmaceutical bromide-salt manufacturing.
Is hydrobromic acid stronger than hydrochloric acid?
Yes. HBr is a stronger acid than HCl because the H–Br bond is weaker than the H–Cl bond, so it dissociates more completely in water (pKa ≈ -9 for HBr versus about -7 for HCl).
How is hydrobromic acid handled safely?
HBr is highly corrosive and its vapors are irritating and toxic. Use acid-resistant gloves and eye protection under local exhaust ventilation or a fume hood, and store it away from bases and oxidizers. In transport it is UN1788, Hydrobromic acid, Class 8 (corrosive). Always follow the product SDS.
