Deionized water (CAS 7732-18-5) is water processed through ion exchange to strip out dissolved mineral ions — sodium, calcium, iron, copper — leaving a clear, odorless liquid suited to work where tap water introduces problems. It is the workhorse fluid for lab reagent preparation, analytical work, industrial cooling loops, and electronics cleaning, anywhere mineral residue or ionic contamination would foul a process. Why This Concentration
Deionized water is not sold by concentration the way acids and caustics are; the buying decision is about what has been removed, not what has been added. Ion exchange targets dissolved ionic species — the minerals that leave scale on heat-transfer surfaces, spot-deposit on rinsed parts, and interfere with analytical baselines. If your process fails on mineral deposits, conductivity drift, or ionic interference, deionized water is the fix. If your application is extremely sensitive — trace-level analysis, for example — evaluate whether an additional purification step downstream of DI water is warranted for your method; review the technical data sheet against your own spec before ordering. Deionized water is a clear, odorless liquid — formula H2O, molecular weight 18.015, CAS 7732-18-5. It has a density of 1, is completely miscible in aqueous systems, and carries a vapor pressure of 23.75 mmHg. There is no color, no odor, and no visible difference from ordinary water; the distinction is what is no longer in it. That absence is the product: when the ions are gone, so are the scale, the spotting, and the conductivity they cause.

Store it in HDPE or glass containers to prevent leaching, keep containers closed to limit air exposure and recontamination, and keep it in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. Standard good practice — gloves, goggles, ventilated storage — applies as it does across any chemical handling area. Match your container draw-down to your usage rate: once opened, smaller containers limit the contamination window better than a part-empty drum.
