ACS Grade means the ethylene glycol meets the purity specifications set by the American Chemical Society for reagent chemicals. For a buyer, that translates to tighter quality control on trace contaminants — metals, chloride, sulfate, water content — than a technical or industrial grade would provide. If your process feeds into an analytical method, a QC reference, or a formulation where impurity budgets are narrow, ACS Grade is the right pick.
The "Inhibited" designation adds a corrosion-inhibitor package to the base glycol. Uninhibited ethylene glycol in a metal system will degrade over time, producing organic acids that attack copper, aluminum, and ferrous alloys. Inhibitors neutralize that acid formation and passivate metal surfaces. If you are filling a closed-loop cooling system, a chiller, or any recirculating heat-transfer circuit with mixed metallurgy, the inhibited formula saves you from premature component failure and costly fluid changeouts.
If your application is strictly a bench-scale solvent reaction or a moisture-control formulation where metal contact is not a concern, an uninhibited ACS-grade glycol may be sufficient. But for any system with wetted metal and extended service life, the inhibited version is the practical choice.
Chemical Profile
Ethylene glycol (CAS 107-21-1, molecular formula C₂H₆O₂, molecular weight 62.07 g/mol) is a simple diol — two hydroxyl groups on a two-carbon backbone. That structure makes it fully miscible with water and gives it strong hygroscopic behavior. In its pure form it presents as a clear, colorless, syrupy liquid with no detectable odor. The density is 1.115 at 68 °F, making it noticeably denser than water. Vapor pressure is low — 0.06 mmHg at 68 °F — so it does not readily evaporate at ambient conditions, which is one reason it performs well in closed-loop thermal systems where fluid loss matters. Solubility in water is essentially complete, at 100 mg/mL or greater at 63.5 °F.
Industrial Applications
Ethylene glycol's combination of a low freezing point, high boiling point, and thermal stability makes it a workhorse fluid across several industries.

Antifreeze and Coolant Formulations. Diluted with water to the target freeze-point depression, inhibited ethylene glycol is the base fluid in most automotive and industrial coolant systems. The inhibitor package in this ACS-grade product makes it suitable for lab-scale coolant testing or pilot formulations where purity consistency matters.

Heat Transfer Fluid. In industrial chillers, HVAC glycol loops, and process heat exchangers, ethylene glycol serves as the working fluid. Its low vapor pressure keeps the system at low pressure even at elevated temperatures, reducing mechanical stress on seals and fittings.

Solvent for Chemical Reactions. The diol structure and full water miscibility make ethylene glycol a useful high-boiling solvent in organic synthesis — particularly condensation reactions, esterifications, and polymerizations where you need to drive off water while keeping the reaction medium liquid.

Handling & Storage
Ethylene glycol carries a GHS signal word of Warning (per the product's GHS classification). The two hazard statements to know:

Swallowing is the primary human-health risk. Ethylene glycol is acutely toxic by ingestion even in small volumes, and its sweet taste makes accidental ingestion a real hazard in any setting where food or drink is nearby. Keep containers sealed and clearly labeled at all times.
PPE: Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or butyl rubber) and splash goggles at a minimum. In enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, ensure mechanical ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low — though the vapor pressure is very low, mist generation during transfers can still produce inhalable droplets.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Use containers made of HDPE, polypropylene, or stainless steel — all compatible with ethylene glycol. Keep away from strong oxidizing agents and strong acids. The primary environmental hazard is liquid release: ethylene glycol is miscible with water and will readily penetrate soil and contaminate groundwater and nearby waterways if spilled. Contain any spill immediately.
