Common Laboratory Applications

Glassware Cleaning and Final Rinse

Quickly removes organic residues from beakers, flasks, and volumetric glassware, leaving surfaces clean for the next procedure

Sample Preparation

Used as a solvent in extraction workflows, recrystallization procedures, and dilution steps prior to instrumental analysis

Chromatography

Serves as a mobile phase component or cleaning solvent in thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography setups

Equipment Degreasing

Removes oils, adhesives, and residual compounds from laboratory instruments, fume hood surfaces, and analytical equipment

Spectroscopy and Analytical Work

Employed in UV-Vis and IR sample preparation where a volatile, low-residue solvent is required

General Solvent Use

Functions as an intermediate solvent for reagent preparation, dilution, and cleaning across multiple disciplines

Technical grade acetone serves a broad range of laboratory functions due to its rapid evaporation and low residue characteristics:

Handling and Storage Guidelines

Acetone is classified as a highly flammable liquid (GHS Category 2). Laboratories should implement the following precautions:

  • Review the SDS thoroughly before first use and ensure all personnel have access to it
  • Eliminate ignition sources: Acetone has a flash point of -20°C — keep it away from open flames, hot plates, sparking equipment, and static discharge
  • Use appropriate PPE: Nitrile or butyl rubber gloves, chemical splash goggles, and a laboratory coat at minimum. Use a fume hood or ensure adequate ventilation to limit vapor inhalation
  • Store in a flammable-rated cabinet: Keep containers sealed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from oxidizing agents, acids, and heat sources
  • Ground and bond containers when transferring bulk quantities to prevent static buildup
  • Follow your facility's chemical hygiene plan and all applicable OSHA, DOT, and local regulations for flammable solvent handling and disposal
