OSHA Expands Testing Lab Recognition for Nemko North America

What Changed

OSHA has officially granted Nemko North America, Inc. (NNA) an expansion of its scope of recognition as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). The decision, published in the Federal Register on February 18, 2026, allows NNA to test and certify products against three additional safety standards.

The expansion became effective immediately upon publication.

Why NRTLs Matter for the Chemical Industry

Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories are organizations that OSHA has approved to test and certify equipment and products used in U.S. workplaces. If your facility uses electrical equipment, pressure vessels, safety devices, or laboratory instruments, chances are they carry an NRTL certification mark.

For chemical operations specifically, NRTL-tested equipment includes:

  • Explosion-proof electrical equipment — Required in areas where flammable vapors, gases, or dusts may be present
  • Fume hoods and ventilation systems — Laboratory and industrial ventilation equipment used with hazardous chemicals
  • Safety relief valves — Pressure-relief devices on chemical storage tanks and process equipment
  • Analytical instruments — Lab equipment used for quality control testing of chemical products

Details of the Expansion

NNA originally submitted its application on July 30, 2024, requesting recognition for three additional test standards. OSHA published the preliminary notice in December 2025 and opened a public comment period through January 15, 2026. No comments were received, and OSHA proceeded with the grant.

The document was signed in Washington, D.C. on February 12, 2026, by Douglas Parker, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health.

What This Means Going Forward

More NRTLs with broader recognition scopes means more testing capacity and potentially faster product certifications for manufacturers. For chemical facilities purchasing new equipment, this is a positive development — it expands the pool of labs that can certify the specialized equipment used in hazardous environments.

Facilities should verify that any equipment they purchase for use in hazardous classified areas carries a valid NRTL certification mark from a recognized laboratory.

Alliance's Take

NRTL certifications may seem like an administrative detail, but they're a critical link in the safety chain for anyone handling chemicals. The equipment your team uses every day — from fume hoods to explosion-proof lighting — depends on independent testing labs to verify it's safe for use in chemical environments.

At Alliance Chemical, we take a similar approach to product quality: every chemical we ship comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) so you know exactly what you're getting. Whether you're outfitting a laboratory or a production facility, documentation and certification matter.
