Surface contamination is the leading cause of adhesion failures in metal finishing. Even trace amounts of oil, grease, or machining residue left on a substrate can produce fisheyes, blistering, and premature coating delamination. Technical-grade acetone at 99.9% purity provides the fast-evaporating, residue-free solvent performance that metal finishing operations depend on for consistent, defect-free results.

Alliance Chemical supplies technical-grade acetone in volumes sized for everything from small job shops to high-throughput finishing lines.

Common Metal Finishing Applications

Pre-Treatment Surface Preparation

— Removing oils, greases, and machining fluids from metal substrates prior to electroplating, anodizing, powder coating, or wet painting

Final Wipe-Down Before Coating

— A quick acetone wipe ensures a contaminant-free surface immediately before the finishing step, reducing reject rates

Fixture and Equipment Cleaning

— Dissolving accumulated residue from racks, jigs, masking fixtures, and spray equipment between production runs

Adhesion Testing Preparation

— Cleaning test panels and coupons to ensure reliable, repeatable results during quality control checks

Temporary Coating Removal

— Stripping protective films and soluble marking inks from parts entering the finishing process

Technical-grade acetone is widely used across metal finishing workflows, including:

Why Acetone Works in Metal Finishing

Acetone's properties align well with the demands of surface preparation:

Property Value Relevance to Metal Finishing
Boiling Point ~56°C (133°F) Evaporates rapidly — no residue left on parts
Solvent Power Dissolves oils, greases, resins Effective degreasing in a single wipe
Miscibility Fully miscible with water Compatible with aqueous rinse stages
Grade Technical / Industrial Suitable for process-critical surface preparation
Purity Per COA (99.9% nominal) Minimizes trace contaminants on finished surfaces
Packaging Quart through 275-Gal Tote Scales from bench work to production volume

Handling and Storage

Acetone is highly flammable (NFPA flammability rating: 3) and requires proper controls in any metal finishing environment. Always:

  • Review the SDS before first use and ensure all personnel handling acetone have been trained on its hazards
  • Use appropriate PPE — chemical-resistant gloves, splash-proof safety goggles, and adequate ventilation or respiratory protection per SDS guidance
  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, sparks, and open flame — in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106 for flammable liquids
  • Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use to prevent vapor accumulation and minimize evaporative loss
  • Ground and bond containers during dispensing to prevent static discharge
  • Follow all applicable local, state, and federal regulations for flammable solvent storage and disposal in metal finishing facilities
