In oil and gas operations, residue buildup, paraffin deposits, and contaminated surfaces cost time and money. Technical grade acetone at 99.9% purity delivers the fast-acting solvent performance this industry demands — cutting through wax, grease, and hydrocarbon residues without leaving behind impurities that compromise downstream processes.

Alliance Chemical supplies bulk acetone in volumes that match real-world operational needs, from bench-scale lab work to full-scale field operations.

Common Oil and Gas Applications

Paraffin and wax removal

— Dissolves paraffin wax deposits from tubing, rods, and production equipment, restoring flow rates without mechanical intervention.

Equipment and surface degreasing

— Removes hydrocarbon residues, oils, and greases from valves, flanges, and fittings prior to maintenance, inspection, or re-coating.

Pipeline and vessel cleaning

— Used as a flushing solvent to clean pipelines, tanks, and process vessels between product changeovers or before commissioning.

Surface preparation for coatings

— Prepares metal surfaces by removing contaminants before applying protective coatings, epoxies, or corrosion inhibitors.

Laboratory and analytical use

— Serves as a cleaning solvent and reagent in on-site and third-party lab testing of crude oil, produced water, and process samples.

Adhesive and sealant removal

— Breaks down cured adhesives, gasket materials, and thread sealants during equipment teardown and overhaul.

Acetone's rapid evaporation rate, strong solvency, and water miscibility make it a versatile workhorse across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations:

Handling and Storage

Acetone is classified as a highly flammable liquid and vapor (GHS Category 2). Oil and gas facilities should incorporate these protocols into their site-specific safety plans:

  • Read the SDS thoroughly before handling, storage, or use. Alliance Chemical provides an SDS with every shipment.
  • Eliminate ignition sources — Acetone has a flash point of -20°C (-4°F). Keep away from open flames, sparks, hot surfaces, and static discharge. Use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof electrical equipment in handling areas.
  • Ventilation is critical — Use only in well-ventilated areas or with local exhaust ventilation. Acetone vapor is heavier than air and can accumulate in low-lying or confined spaces.
  • Wear appropriate PPE — At minimum: chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or butyl rubber recommended), splash-proof safety goggles, and a lab coat or chemical-resistant apron. Use respiratory protection if ventilation is insufficient.
  • Store properly — Keep in tightly sealed, original containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, and incompatible materials (strong oxidizers, acids, bases). Ground and bond containers during dispensing to prevent static buildup.
  • Follow regulatory requirements — Comply with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations for flammable liquid storage, handling, and disposal in oil and gas environments.
