Handling & Storage
Soda ash carries a Warning signal word and the hazard statement H319: Causes serious eye irritation (per the product's GHS classification). In dusty operations — scooping, dumping bags, or pneumatic transfer — use a dust mask or respirator rated for nuisance particulates, and ensure the work area has adequate ventilation to keep airborne dust below occupational exposure limits.
Store soda ash in a cool, dry area in sealed containers. The material is hygroscopic and will absorb atmospheric moisture, leading to caking and loss of free-flowing character. HDPE drums, lined fiber drums, and sealed poly bags are all compatible. Keep it separated from strong acids — contact produces an exothermic reaction with vigorous CO₂ evolution, which can pressurize a sealed container.

Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is not classified as a DOT hazardous material for transport. It carries no UN number, no hazard class, no packing group, and no proper shipping name under the Hazardous Materials Table (per 49 CFR 172.101). Standard ground, air, and ocean carriers can accept it without hazmat placarding or shipping papers typically required for regulated goods.
While the transport classification itself does not impose hazmat restrictions, individual carriers may apply their own handling surcharges or routing rules. The GHS classification (H319, eye irritation) still applies at the receiving end — ensure your facility's receiving team has the SDS on hand and appropriate PPE available.
