Product Overview

Nitric Acid 5% is a dilute aqueous solution of nitric acid (HNO₃), also known historically as Aqua Fortis. This Reagent Grade formulation is designed for applications requiring controlled oxidizing strength without the extreme corrosivity of concentrated grades. The solution is a clear, colorless liquid with a density of approximately 1.005 g/mL at 25°C.

Manufactured to meet ACS Reagent Grade standards, this product features a tight assay specification (4.8–5.2%) and strict impurity controls. It is fully miscible in water and provides predictable performance for analytical, preparative, and manufacturing processes. Common uses include HPLC mobile phase preparation, metal passivation, and pH adjustment in industrial water treatment.

Key Properties

  • Appearance: Clear, colorless liquid
  • Chemical Formula: HNO₃
  • Grade: Reagent Grade
  • Specific Gravity: 1.005 (Typical)
  • Assay (HNO₃): 4.8% – 5.2%
  • Heavy Metals (as Pb): Max 0.5 ppm
  • CAS Number: 7697-37-2

Common Applications

  • HPLC Mobile Phase: Used in analytical chromatography for the separation of compounds requiring mild acidity and oxidizing capability.
  • Metal Etching & Surface Prep: Acts as a controlled etching agent for metals and semiconductors, minimizing excessive corrosion.
  • pH Control: Utilized for precise acidity adjustment in water treatment and chemical process streams.
  • Laboratory Reagent: Serves as a standard oxidant in qualitative analysis and synthesis protocols.
  • Cleaning Agent: Effective for removing inorganic residues from laboratory glassware and process equipment.

Safety & Handling

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Keep away from incompatible materials such as strong bases and reducing agents. Use HDPE or glass containers.

PPE Requirements: Wear chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles, and a lab coat. Use only in a well-ventilated area or fume hood to avoid inhalation of vapors.

Emergency: In case of skin or eye contact, flush with copious water for at least 15 minutes. If inhaled, move to fresh air. Refer to the SDS (UN 2031, Nitric acid solution, Class 8, PG II) for full safety data.
