MNAK is a clear, colorless liquid with the formula C7H14O and a molecular weight of 114.19 (CAS 110-43-0). Its density is 0.82 — roughly 6.8 lb per gallon — so it is lighter than water and will float on it. It is only slightly soluble in water, about 0.4%, which is why it separates cleanly in water-contact processes rather than dissolving away. Vapor pressure is low at 3 mmHg, giving it a slow, controlled evaporation rate compared with fast ketones. The flash point is 126 °F, and its vapors are heavier than air, so they collect low — in pits, sumps, and drum-storage corners. The fruity odor is strong and recognizable, which works in your favor as an early leak indicator.
Industrial Applications
MNAK earns its place in a solvent lineup because it dissolves aggressively but releases slowly. That combination drives most of its real-world use:

Paints and coatings. As a tail solvent in solvent-borne coatings, MNAK keeps the film open longer during cure. Formulators use it to improve flow and leveling and to fight dry-spray in hot conditions, where a fast ketone would flash off before the film settles.

Adhesives. In adhesive formulations it carries the polymer, controls open time, and evaporates on a schedule that lets bonds set without solvent entrapment.

Extraction. Pharmaceutical and specialty-chemical operations use MNAK as an extraction solvent. Its low water solubility gives clean phase separation, and the ACS purity keeps the extract free of solvent-borne contaminants.

Organic synthesis. As a seven-carbon ketone it serves as an intermediate and reaction solvent in chemical manufacturing.

Handling & Storage
MNAK carries the signal word Warning, with hazard statements H226 Flammable liquid and vapour, H302 Harmful if swallowed, H332 Harmful if inhaled, and H336 May cause drowsiness or dizziness (per the product's GHS classification). Treat it as a flammable-liquid workflow: ground and bond during transfer, keep it away from heat, sparks, and open flame, and remember that the vapors are heavier than air and will travel along the floor toward an ignition source.
Wear chemical-resistant gloves and goggles at minimum, and work with ventilation adequate to keep vapor from accumulating — the drowsiness and dizziness hazard (H336) is the one operators actually encounter when transferring in a closed room. Store in a cool, dry area away from strong oxidizing agents and acids, in closed original containers. HDPE and glass are appropriate container materials. Keep drum bungs tight between uses; the odor is strong enough that a loose bung announces itself quickly.

It moves under UN1110 (per 49 CFR 172.101), Hazard Class 3 (per 49 CFR 172.101), Packing Group III (per 49 CFR 172.101), with the proper shipping name N-AMYL METHYL KETONE (per 49 CFR 172.101). Packing Group III places it in the lower danger tier within Class 3, which keeps packaging and carrier options broader than for faster-flashing ketones — but it still requires UN-spec packaging, hazmat labeling, and proper shipping papers, all of which we prepare in-house.
