Trichloroethylene is a halocarbon commonly used as an industrial solvent. It is a clear, colourless non-flammable liquid with a chloroform-like sweet smell. It is commonly known as chlorothene.
Application: Trichloroethylene has been used in miscellaneous chemical synthesis and solvent applications as a synthesis feedstock for products such as paints, adhesives and cleaners. Also used as a reactant to produce pesticide intermediates, as a solvent in pharmaceutical manufacture, and as a carrier solvent in formulated consumer products such as insecticides, fungicides, paint removers, and paint strippers.
